Flood Situation Report
Sabrina Sharmin/15 July 2013/Dhaka: Heavy monsoon rain and onrush water from upstream since last couple of days has caused the rivers to swell and overflow their banks, causing flooding especially in Northern part of Bangladesh namely Jamalpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts. Many areas in these districts have been inundated.
In the RDRS working area in north- western region, water level of major rivers and their tributaries have marked a sharp rise causing inundation of lowlands. Panchagarh and Thakurgaon districts have been most affected. Thousands of people have been marooned and many people have taken shelter in the flood shelter centres in these distrcits.
Emergency Response by RDRS: RDRS Bangladesh has taken immediate initiatives to response to the emergency situation. Considering the emergency situation and demand from the local administration, RDRS Bangladesh has already distributed emergency food packages to 354 affected families in Thakurgaon district. Each package is containing 4 kgs rice, 1 kg bitten rice, ½ kg molasses, ½ kg lentil, ½ ltr edible oil and 2 sachets oral saline. Beside, RDRS has distributed 400 kgs rice seeds to
In Panachagarh, RDRS has installed 6 latrins, 3 tubewells and a medical camp in different shelter centre to ensure health and hygienic condition of the affected people.
