One significant innovation in the RDRS programmes in the year 2000 was the introduction of the concept of self-financing for projects. For example, RDRS established 20 demonstration cattle-rearing farms that then brought in considerable income from the sale of milk, heifers, etc.

This income is used in turn to run the demonstration farms, paying for maintenance, purchase of feed and other inputs, and providing the wages for the caretakers.
