The soft touch of silk is the result of a long and dedicated work by some of the poorest women in the world. In northern Bangladesh, RDRS has helped poor or destitute rural women gain the skills in all the stages of silk production-from growing mulberry saplings, to rearing the silkworm cocoons, and then reeling, spinning and weaving the yarn produced by the silkworm. Using their skills, these women can earn a modest but reasonable income and gain self-respect. Many are the only income-earners in their households so their work in sericulture helps support the entire family. |
