| National Workshop held on LEGAL project of RDRS |

A national workshop on Legal Education and Gender Aware Leadership (LEGAL) was held on 15 September at IDB Bhaban, Dhaka . RDRS Bangladesh organised the workshop in cooperation with the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Dhaka . The purpose of the workshop was to share the experiences gained through the LEGAL project of RDRS.

The Honorable Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh , Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MP, was present as chief guest, while His Excellency the Ambassador of The Netherlands Mr C S M Beemsterboer attended the workshop as special guest.

| “Eighty percent women in the villages of the country are not conscious about their rights. It is one of the reasons for women repression in our country,” the Minister said. |

Commending the activities of NGO including RDRS for creating awareness among the rural poor, the Minister said that NGOs have a positive role to play for the development of women in the country. |

Ambassador Beemsterboer appreciated the efforts of both the government of Bangladesh and NGOs for taking various initiatives to establish the rights of women and children. |

| The Executive Director of RDRS Bangladesh Kamaluddin Akbar said, RDRS offers comprensive development support to the poor especially to women. |

The workshop was attended by nearly a hundred participants including lawyers, doctors, teachers, journalists, representatives from government and non-government organisations (NGOs) including community-based organisation (CBOs) from different Districts of northwest Bangladesh . The inaugural session was followed by a Working Session which was also addressed by some women affected social constraints such as dowry and violence. |
