Micro-credit plays
an important part in the activities of most
NGOs, large and small, in Bangladesh. In
the northwest, it is RDRS that provides
much of the economic support to one million
poor households through its comprehensive
development programme.
To its existing micro-credit programme,
RDRS added a new concept in 2000, that
of people-managed credit. With this initiative,
RDRS encourages its beneficiaries, through
the Federations, to take responsibility
for the management of the programme. Thus
the Federations decide which groups will
receive credit and for what purposes.
They also has responsibility for following-up
defaulting customers and loan recovery.
